The well-preserved ancient city of Dubrovnik is a lively place. It dates back to the 7th century, although the magnificent stone walls were built between the 13th and 17 centuries. Tourists swarm the city, especially at night.Unfortunately, many residents moved out of the city over the past 20 years as their properties were converted to short-term rentals for tourists.Although it’s a beautiful place, it feels a little like Disneyland because it’s now mainly enjoyed by tourists.A TV reporter stopped Trish and others to ask them what they thought about the large crowds of tourists.Still, there are some quiet places. And there are quiet times, mainly in the early morning. There are still some people (and many pigeons) who live here. You can meet locals at a barbershop on one of the main streets. I got a haircut here after waiting my turn. The barber gave preferential treatment to residents (as he should). One of the main attractions is climbing the stairs to walk the 1.2-mile wall which rings the perimeter of the old city.At the top of the wall there are panoramic vistas in nearly every direction. There are even a couple of basketball courts high atop the wall.A map at the entrance to the old city shows how many bombs were dropped on it in 1991, during the Croatian War of Independence. There are few signs of that destruction today.A statue honors Ivan Gundulic (1589โ1638), a celebrated Baroque poet from the Republic of Ragusa. Many tourists visit to see where the popular TV series, “Game of Thrones” was filmed. The infamous “Walk of Shame” staircase from “Game of Thrones” is the Jesuit Staircase located in the heart of Old Town.Other “Game of Thrones” filming locations include “King’s Landing.” Kayakers left from this cove one early evening.Swimmers braved the high cliff to dive into the water.Above the cove is a small outdoor bar.A good place to watch the sunset and marvel at nature is from the perch of the bar at the top of the cove.We stayed at this hotel above the Marco Polo restaurant.
